Wrestling legend Rob Van Dam dropped by CBS Sports Radio on Wednesday to discuss his new documentary, Headstrong, which chronicles his life and career, including his relationships, stand-up comedy tour, and experience with concussions, among other themes.

“I’m really proud of the way that it turned out,” Van Dam said in studio on Taz & The Moose. “The feedback that I’m getting, I couldn’t have expected (it). People are saying it’s important and one of the best documentaries of (former) wrestlers. We had goals in mind. I used The Resurrection of Jake the Snake, I used that as a bit of a model. I was always on the phone asking those guys (questions). . . . It makes me feel like it’s a great representation of me and my energy. People tell me they’re inspired and people can relate to it because RVD has to go through life’s obstacles and try and keep cool, just like everybody else.”

Van Dam worked with director Joe Clarke on the project and learned a lot about himself throughout production.

“The very first draft that Joe did that was sad and depressing, I didn’t recognize me,” Van Dam said. “That’s not me. That’s not my energy. Eventually, I got it. But the first time when I watched it with Joe, I was like, ‘Dude, this is a movie about some dude that’s so messed up and he doesn’t even realize it and his life is over and he doesn’t even know it. He’s out there thinking things are good.’ That’s the way it came across the first time. That’s not me at all. Then we got it where I wanted it.”
