Over the last two decades, Daniel Negreanu has established himself as one of the best poker players – if not the best poker player – in the world. Nicknamed Kid Poker, Negreanu has won six World Series of Poker bracelets and has twice finished 11th in the main event, most recently in 2015.

The game has changed a great deal over the last two decades, but Negreanu, 44, has stayed on top.

“The game of poker, the way it looked when I started playing in the late-90s, is very different than what you see today,” he told Bill Reiter. “The advance of AI and different software programs you can use to figure out stuff that, in the past, old-school gamblers kind of just figured out by trial and error – now there’s actual evidence of in this situation, this is what you should do. That never was around before. A lot of the top players at the very highest level use that to improve their game.

“The game will always continue to evolve and improve in terms of the quality of players,” Negreanu continued, “but if you don’t study as well, you’re very likely to be passed by the young up-and-comers.”
