Brinson: Mike Mayock Will Work For Jon Gruden

Mayock is the GM, and Gruden is the head coach, but there's no doubt about who's truly in charge of the Raiders

Eight NFL teams – one quarter of the league – are looking for a new head coach, including the Cincinnati Bengals, who fired Marvin Lewis, and his 0-7 playoff record, after 16 seasons.

Yet, the Oakland Raiders hiring Mike Mayock may have been the most surprising development Monday.

“Mike Mayock is a media guy, and seeing him jump from the NFL Network to the Oakland Raiders to be a GM is certainly a surprising move,” CBS Sports senior NFL writer Will Brinson said on The DA Show. “But I’ve long said that cockroaches and robots would rule the world in a post-nuclear-apocalyptic scenario before Marvin Lewis is fired. So I would say Marvin being done in Cincinnati might be the most surprising thing.”

Lewis, 60, went 131-122-3 with the Bengals. But he went winless in the postseason – and just 8-26 against the Steelers.

Mayock, meanwhile, will transition from a studio to a front office. But make no mistake, Brinson says: Mayock will work for Jon Gruden – not the other way around.

“When one guy at the company is getting a 10-year, $100-million contract, everyone else at the company works for that guy,” Brinson said. “So Mike Mayock might think he can come in there and have final say and he’ll have creative input. At the end of the day, Jon Gruden is going to pull the trigger. I think he's going to be able to give Gruden tons of input in the scouting process and he’ll be the GM, but if you believe that anybody other than Jon Gruden is pulling the strings for the Raiders, you’re crazy.”

That, however, probably won’t stop Gruden from saying all the right things about how excited he is to work under Mayock.

“Gruden is going to act like he works for Mike Mayock, (but) that ain’t how it works,” Brinson said. “Gruden is in charge there, and all these little quotes that he (puts) out there in the media are very much falsehoods.”
