The Seattle Seahawks made Russell Wilson the top-paid player in the NFL this week, signing him to a four-year, $140-million extension that includes a $65 million signing bonus.

NFL analyst Solomon Wilcots called the move a “no-brainer.”

“Absolutely,” Wilcots said on Tiki & Tierney. “There is no doubt. No. 1, you’re talking about football IQ. He walked in the door having learned the offense, and then that way he can be a leader in the huddle. When you know more about the plays that are called than the other 10 guys in the huddle, they have to come to you. They have to look to you. He can make all the adjustments.”

Wilson, 30, threw for 3,448 yards, 35 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season. He has won a Super Bowl and played in another.

“I would say there’s probably only two quarterbacks playing better right now than Russell Wilson,” Wilcots said. “One is Tom Brady; the other is Patrick Mahomes. Other than that, when you talk about the fact that he represents a large portion in terms of the percentage of offense and he’s a born leader – I don’t know. Those are the only two guys I can say emphatically that’s playing better.”

The Seahawks went 10-6 last season before losing to the Cowboys in the Wild Card. They play in one of the better divisions in the NFL.

“It’s a good division,” Wilcots said. “I think San Francisco will be better. I think they’ll solidify what they’re doing at the quarterback position. They made it tough on some teams at the end of the year. I think they’ll be better. Arizona is a team I don’t know which way they’re going. We’ll have to see. But you know Seattle is going to be there, and you know the Rams are going to be there. So I like the way this division is going, and it does start with the quarterbacks.”
