The Carolina Panthers fired Ron Rivera on Tuesday, and Jason La Canfora wasn’t the least bit surprised.

“From the moment (David) Tepper bought the team, all my reporting was he was going to have to be blown away by Ron Rivera and Cam Newton to pay those guys the kind of money the market likely would,” the CBS Sports NFL insider said on Tiki & Tierney. “He knew they were both really good at their job but they might not fit his exact ideals and models of what a quarterback and a head coach should be – and when you pay $2.3 billion cash, you’re only going to sit on your hands for so long.”

Rivers went 76-63-1 in nine seasons in Carolina. He has the most wins in franchise history, led the Panthers to the playoffs four times, and was a two-time NFL Coach of the Year (2013, 2015).

But the Panthers are 12-16 since the beginning of last season.

“It was filled with a lot of losses where the defense – Rivera’s side of the ball – came up really short,” La Canfora said. “Two-hundred-fifty yards on the ground to Washington, on the heels of getting blown out by Atlanta few weeks earlier, that’ll do it. For Tepper, why wait any longer? Let Ron Rivera be free to interview with other teams if he wants to, and the meaningful part of 2019 for the Panthers is over.

The Panthers (5-7) trail the Eagles (5-7), Buccaneers (5-7), Bears (7-6), Rams (7-5) and Vikings (8-4) for the final Wild Card spot.

“So I really get this one all-around,” La Canfora said. “I think Ron will be better off for it, I think the Panthers will be better off for it, and Ron Rivera will get a job. There’s no doubt in my mind. I think he’ll get a very good job, whether he fits in with a team like Atlanta or a team like the Giants or a team like the Cowboys. I still think Jerry Jones takes his best shot at Lincoln Riley before he does anything else, but I think Ron Rivera’s resume and his leadership skills and what he stands for will resonate very strongly with a lot of these owners.”
