James Harden scored 40 points in a 103-98 comeback win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday, pushing his streak of 30-plus-point games to 23. The Rockets (29-20) are 17-6 during the streak and have put their 11-14 start behind them.

“(Harden) knows what’s at stake for this team given how they started so poorly and the funk that they were in early on,” The Athletic Rockets reporter Kelly Iko said on After Hours with Amy Lawrence “And to think of the Western Conference standings, he’s taken his game to an even higher level. I don’t know how how that was possible coming off an MVP, but normally you see players – All-Star and All-NBA players – (average) 25, 30 points. But he’s thinking 40, 45, 50. He’s just thinking in the higher stratosphere.”

Harden has scored 40+ points in 14 of his last 23 games.

“It’s been amazing to watch in person because you don’t see stuff like this hardly ever,” Iko said. “There’s the Wilt Chamberlains, the Jordans, the Kobes – there’s only certain times in history where you’ve seen scoring feats like that on a nightly basis, and it’s been pretty amazing to see up close.”

Chris Paul (hamstring), meanwhile, returned to action for the first time since Dec. 20. He had 12 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals in 25 minutes against the Magic.

“Once Chris Paul is 100 percent, I think (Harden’s) points will come down,” Iko said. “I think they have a much larger goal at stake – not so much the scoring streaks.”
