Couture On Cormier: He Still Has That Fire

Daniel Cormier wants a rubber match with Stipe Miocic, which doesn't surprise Randy Couture in the slightest

In August, Daniel Cormier lost for just the second time in his career, falling victim to a fourth-round knockout courtesy of Stipe Miocic at UFC 241. It was Cormier’s first defeat in over four years, and it cost him the UFC heavyweight championship.

It would be easy for the 40-year-old Cormier to retire. After all, he’s one of the best – and most respected – champions in the history of the sport, his only losses coming to Miocic and Jon Jones.

Cormier, however, seems to have other intentions. He wants a rematch – or better yet, a rubber match – with Miocic, who he beat via a first-round knockout at UFC 226 in July 2018.

Randy Couture understands entirely why Cormier (22-2, 1 NC) wants another go  with the 37-year-old Miocic, who is also one of the best in the sport.

“You still have that fire,” Couture told Bill Reiter. “You want to grind out another camp. You know what it takes to get there. Daniel is not a guy to back away from a challenge, so I admire him for that. I think he’ll do well.”

Cormier knew beating Miocic a second time wouldn’t be easy, and he certainly had his moments in the rematch. In the end, though, Miocic was too much.

But Cormier likely learned a lot in the second fight that he could use in the third.

“He needed to make Miocic wrestle him more and get away from trading blows and striking,” Couture said.
