Nick Foles was the ultimate security blanket for the Philadelphia Eagles. If Carson Wentz got hurt (and he did, two years in a row), Foles would come to the rescue (and he did, two years in a row).

But now Foles is in Jacksonville. Are Eagles fans worried that their security blanket is gone?

“In the offseason, but not now,” Eagles analyst Howard Eskin said on Tiki & Tierney. “When you look back at that (2017) season, without Nick Foles, the Eagles don’t win that Super Bowl. There’s no question he outplayed Tom Brady. It was an amazing, amazing game, watching how relaxed he was. But they had to let Nick Foles go. You can’t pay a backup quarterback $25 million. Carson Wentz is your franchise quarterback.”

Wentz was an MVP candidate in 2017, when he threw for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns and just seven interceptions in 12+ games.

“Carson Wentz was there for almost 13 games,” Eskin said. “He was, I think, the MVP of the league that year. His numbers were as good as any quarterback in the league even though he played three less games. He was a big part of the reason that they got home field, and then Nick Foles took over from there.”

By “took over from there,” Eskin means Foles led the Eagles to a Super Bowl and was named Super Bowl MVP. Some Eagles fans, undoubtedly, wanted Foles back in Philly this season, but Eskin maintains it was the right move to let him walk.

“Carson Wentz is a better quarterback,” Eskin said. “I love Nick Foles – love the guy. But Carson Wentz is a better quarterback. One bad game, (fans) will start whining and crying again . . . but he’s healthy. He looks good."
