Pete Rose dropped by The DA Show on Thursday to discuss his new book, the NBA Finals, and . . . Joe DiMaggio’s endowment?

Yes, Joe DiMaggio’s endowment. And no, we’re not talking financials.

“Well, all I can say about Joe is he’s a better man than me,” Rose said, laughing. “I only hit in 44 in a row. I don’t know how in the hell he hit in 56 straight games carrying that thing around.”

Penis jokes aside, Rose, 78, once spent several weeks with DiMaggio in Vietnam. The experience left quite an impression on him.

“(He) couldn’t have been a nicer guy to . . . those soldiers in Vietnam,” Rose said. “He was so humble and down to earth. He was well-retired and he wasn’t a player no more, but you couldn’t have wrote a script for him to be more cordial and more nice to those guys in Vietnam.”

Rose recalls one anecdote in particular.

“We would go into these places where we would be the only people that these guys working there would see for six months other than the mailman,” Rose said. “And all of a sudden Joe D walks in and talks to them for an hour, hour-and-a-half, and took time with everybody. You could just see the gleam in their eyes. All of them knew who Joe DiMaggio was. They didn’t know me. I was only in the league three or four years. It was a pleasure to see the smiling faces Joe created just by being Joe DiMaggio and being a nice guy.”

DiMaggio died in 1999 at the age of 84.

“In my lifetime – and I met seven presidents – there’s two guys when a guy walked into a room, the room lit up. The room literally lit up,” Rose said. “And one was Joe DiMaggio.”

The other? Bill Parcells, when he was coach of the Giants.

“He just made such a presence,” Rose said. “Those are the only two guys I’ve ever been around that the room lit up when they walked in the room. And I’ve been in the room with a lot of important people.”
