Tom Brady and Bill Belichick reportedly spoke via phone about the quarterback’s upcoming free agency Tuesday, and the call, according to reports, didn’t go well.

What should we, as NFL fans, make of that?

Jason La Canfora says not much.

“This is going to ultimately be something that Tom Brady and Robert Kraft figure out or don’t figure out,” the CBS Sports NFL insider said on Tiki & Tierney. “Bill Belichick, we know he’s not sentimental, even with a player of this caliber. Bill Belichick, on a certain level, I’m sure has had his feathers ruffled by the fact that, for the first time in his New England coaching career since Tom Brady took over for an injured Drew Bledsoe, he doesn’t know who his quarterback is going to be – and there isn’t a clear road to another quarterback.”

Brady, who turns 43 in August, is one of numerous quarterbacks who could find a new landing spot this offseason.

“We’re in a year where the competition for quarterbacks, this is going to be a bizarre offseason, something the likes of which we’ve probably never seen before,” La Canfora said. “They’re preparing for an offseason program literally not knowing what offense they’re running. Bill would love for all this to have been settled previously, but Bill’s not the one who cuts the checks. Bill’s not the one who does have this sort of emotional connection that Robert Kraft has.”

He’s also not as patient.

“Robert Kraft is doing the right thing right now,” La Canfora said. “He’s giving Tom Brady the time and space, the width and breadth he needs, to – for the first time in his life – figure out what other people think he’s worth and find out his market value and see what other teams are willing to do for him on the field in terms of the cast around him and what they’re willing to pay him and what their plan is to win right now. And then there will be a time and place for him to sit with Robert Kraft before he makes a final decision. I think people are getting a little over their skis and handicapping this thing because it’s still in its infancy. It doesn’t mean it couldn’t go from zero to 60 in a couple of days, but we’re not there yet.”
