No Cam Newton? No problem. Kyle Allen was masterful in Arizona

Kyle Allen had a great game for Carolina this past Sunday, going 19-of-26 for 261 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-20 win over Arizona. If you were surprised he played so well, you shouldn’t have been.

“People don’t realize that he hung up 33 points on the No. 1 Saints defense,” Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson said on Tiki & Tierney. “I don’t think people see that.”

Last December, Allen went 16-of-27 for 228 yards and three touchdowns (two pass, one rush) in a 33-14 over the Saints in New Orleans.

“The guy can play ball,” Thompson said. “We had no worries or no nothing like that (about him filling in for Cam). On the defensive side, we just got to go out there and still play our football, do what we do best: force turnovers, three-and-outs and give our offense (the ball back). We had all faith in Kyle. The saying around here is ‘Next man up,’ and I’m pretty sure that’s everywhere else. I think Kyle did a great job.”

Newton, who is nursing a foot injury, has an infectious personality. Allen is a little more low-key.

“He’s not like a rah-rah guy, but he’s definitely going to lead by example,” Thompson said. “He’s definitely going to go out there and show you, and you’re going to see by his play that he’s a leader. Guys are going to feed off his energy, especially the defense. We feed off the offense, the offense feeds off the defense, and at the end of the day, everybody feeds off special teams. That’s the type of leader I see. He’s a guy who leads by example.”

The Panthers (1-2) play the Texans in Houston this Sunday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET.
