The New York Jets entered Thursday night with a crowded quarterback room, but that didn’t prevent them from drafting Sam Darnold third overall. The USC product joins a franchise that rosters Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater, Christian Hackenberg, and Bryce Petty.

But don’t be surprised if Darnold starts during his rookie season – and sooner rather than later.

“He’s a very serious individual,” CBS-2 NY sportscaster Steve Overmyer said on The DA Show. “Football is extremely important for him. It was almost difficult for him to break a smile last night. It was almost secretive for him to break a smile. When our reporter ended up asking him a question about sitting behind Josh McCown, the look on Sam Darnold’s face told me, ‘This isn’t going to be a coronation for McCown. This is going to be a competition.’ His response was very polite: I took forward to learning from all of these quarterbacks.’ But what you really hear when you read between the lines is, ‘I’m going for it.’ And I think you like to hear that from a rookie. The possibility of him starting the first week of the season, it’s not out of the question."

Darnold completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 4,143 yards, 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season, leading USC to the Pac-12 championship. Many assumed he would redshirt his rookie season, just as he redshirted his freshman year at USC.

“There is that path, and I’m sure that they’re going to figure that out,” Overmyer said. “However, I wouldn’t put it past him to build himself up and to get ready and to have an amazing camp – strong enough that he could be the starting quarterback in Week 1 on Monday Night Football in the spotlight against Detroit.”
