Dave Gettleman drafted Daniel Jones with the sixth pick – in part, he says – because he “knew for a fact” that two other teams wanted him.

FOX Sports NFL writer John Czarnecki doesn’t buy that.

“I just don’t get it,” Czarnecki said on After Hours with Amy Lawrence. “I don’t think (John) Elway lies, and he wasn’t the guy. That’s one of the two teams that’s been mentioned by the New York writers. I don’t think it was Denver at 10. The other one, (Gettleman) thinks, is the Redskins, but I think the Redskins always had their eyes on the Ohio State kid (Dwayne Haskins) because he’s a local kid. He’s from Maryland, and (Dan) Snyder was always pretty hot to trot about him.”

The Giants wound up with three first-round picks last Thursday: Jones at No. 6, Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence at No. 17, and Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker at No. 30.

“The Giants’ best pick might have been their cornerback at the end of the first round,” Czarnecki said. “I just think Gettleman probably could have traded out, should have taken a pass-rusher up there, and then somehow gotten Jones later – at 17, maybe.”

In the end, fans and media will probably never know if the Broncos or Redskins had their eye on Jones.

“Here’s the one thing about the draft,” Czarnecki said. “There’s so much misinformation internally from the teams. They lie. They lie a lot. So people can’t get a feel on who they really want. I think the only player that everybody knew for sure in the mock draft was probably (Kyler) Murray at 1 and (Josh) Jacobs to Oakland. The Raiders didn’t hide the fact that they loved that Alabama running back.”
