Saquon Barkley had a memorable preseason debut against the Browns on Thursday, reeling off a 39-yard run on his first rushing attempt on an NFL field.

Giants fans, well, they were happy.

“I think, first off, it was the patience that he showed on that first run,”’s Art Stapleton said on After Hours with Amy Lawrence. “You talk to Giants fans coming into tonight and all they asked about was, ‘I can’t wait for that first run by Saquon Barkley.’ It was just as if it was written in the stars for Saquon and the Giants, that he would break off that long one.”

Stapleton asked Eli Manning about the run after the game.

“He just kind of looked at me and deadpanned with a little smirk, ‘It was one run. Let’s not go berserk,’” Stapleton said, laughing. “But when it comes to the Giants, believe it or not, last year they only had two runs in the entire season that were longer than Saquon’s first run tonight. That says it all about what you need to know and why the Giants are thrilled for what Saquon could bring to the table.”

The Giants ranked 26th in rushing and 28th in rushing touchdowns last season. Barkley should improve those numbers in 2018.

“Look, it’s preseason,” Stapleton said, “but so far, so good for No. 26.”

The Giants open against Jacksonville on Sept 9. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET.
