Marcus Mariota was the No. 2 overall pick in 2015 and has spent the vast majority of his five-year career as a starting quarterback. After signing with the Las Vegas Raiders, however, he is firmly No. 2 on the QB depth chart behind Derek Carr – or so we think.

What is the Raiders’ plan at quarterback in 2020?

“I think the plan still is Derek Carr is the starting quarterback,” AP Raiders reporter Josh Dubow said on After Hours with Amy Lawrence. “But now instead of having DeShone Kizer and Mike Glennon and Nathan Peterman, now he’s got someone who can legitimately challenge him. There’s maybe a little more pressure on him. If things don’t go as well with Derek, then there’s a more viable option [behind him] that they maybe haven’t had in the last couple of years.”

Carr, a second-round pick in 2014, has thrown for 4,000+ yards in each of the last two seasons, during which he has 40 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Mariota, meanwhile, started 55 of his first 56 games for the Titans but was benched for Ryan Tannehill following a 2-4 start last season. Tannehill helped the Titans to the AFC Championship Game.

“I think [Mariota] understands Derek is the No. 1 guy,” Dubow said. “I think he probably believes he can outplay Derek and show that he can be the No. 1 guy. You don’t become a great athlete if you don’t think you can be better than the guy you’re competing with. I’m sure in his mind he thinks he can surpass him, but I think he goes into this clear-eyed knowing that Derek’s ahead of him. But I think he’s going to do his best to try to pass Derek.”
