In a move that stunned the basketball world, Magic Johnson resigned as Lakers president Tuesday night – and told reporters that someone would have to inform his boss, Jeanie Buss.

“I didn’t see that coming at all,” KNX sports anchor Randy Kerdoon said on Ferrall on the Bench. “It just stunned everybody. When I saw that, first thing I thought was two things: one, something is making him do this, (and two), that’s probably good news for Luke Walton. Jeanie is a big fan of Luke Walton, she wanted him to stay, Magic didn’t want him to stay – and it’s very possible that played a role.”

Johnson, 59, served as team president for over two years and helped bring LeBron James to Los Angeles. The Lakers, however, have suffered through six consecutive losing seasons.

Johnson’s stated reason for stepping down? He wasn’t having fun.

“If you know Magic Johnson, he’s the kind of guy that’s really uncomfortable with people trying to get him not to do what he wants to do,” Kerdoon said. “He wants to congratulate players without worrying about tampering. He wants to be the fun guy. But he also wanted to help Jeanie through that time with the Lakers and turn them around. He did help to do that, but the problem is suddenly Magic just wasn’t having any fun anymore. That is weird to think of.

“But when you think about even when Magic was coach of the Lakers many years ago, Magic didn’t get it why suddenly players weren’t treating him with deference that they would normally give a coach,” Kerdoon continued. “He couldn’t understand these young kids, and then he decided, ‘This isn’t for me. I’m moving on.’ So again, this is kind of interesting that he decided he didn’t want to do this anymore.”

Scott Ferrall doesn’t believe we’ve gotten the full story yet. Neither does Kerdoon.

“I think there’s something different out there, but we’re just not getting it yet,” Kerdoon said. “Maybe he knows something more about the free-agent scenario that we don’t know. Maybe the fact that it hasn’t been going according to plan, and frankly, he’s been feeling a lot of heat – that could play a role, too. I think over the next few days and weeks, it’s going to be interesting to see what part of that comes out and why he made that move.”
