Jadeveon Clowney has been an impact player in the NFL, but the Houston Texans believe now is the time to trade him.

“They’re going to trade him, and they’re going to get a left tackle,” Houston Chronicle NFL writer John McClain said on Ferrall on the Bench. “They deemed it more important to protect Deshaun Watson than it is to keep Clowney on the defense. He’s great against the run, he’s good against the pass – he’s never had 10 sacks. They want to trade him for a left tackle.”

The Texans would like to trade Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in 2014, to the Dolphins for Laremy Tunsil.

“People in Miami say he is untouchable, that he’s the cornerstone of their rebuilding process and they will not part with him,” McClain said. “(Clowney) wants to go to Philadelphia and play for Jim Schwartz and play weak-side end and be able to get the quarterback. But if they’re going to trade a guy of his caliber, they want to get a left tackle. But this offense is built all around Watson. They don’t think they’re going to be able to pay (Clowney) $100 million next year. They got to get Deshaun Watson a new contract. J.J. Watt is going to want a new contract. Somebody has got to suffer, and if they can get a left tackle, they can justify it. If they don’t get a left tackle, then Bill O’Brien will get run out of town.”

While Clowney is a valuable piece, the Texans know that protecting Watson is atop their priority list.

“They don’t want to happen to Deshaun Watson what happened to Andrew Luck,” McClain said. “The Colts waited too late to find good support for him, and they don’t want to do that to Watson after what happened last year.”

With Luck retiring, the Texans have to be salivating about their chances to win the division this season.

“I think every team in the AFC South thinks that,” McClain said. “The Jaguars have a great defense, and they’re hoping Nick Foles can revitalize their offense. Tennessee’s got a good defense, good running game, they’re hoping Marcus Mariota can stay healthy and play well in the last year of his contract. Watson is definitely the best quarterback in the division. The Texans have a good defense. Jacoby Brissett is not Andrew Luck, and Luck being gone changes, I think, the face of the division. It gives everybody a chance to win it.”
