It remains to be seen whether the NFL will punish the New England Patriots for their latest videotaping controversy or, if so, what that punishment would be.

But if it were up to CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora, the punishment would be steep.

“I think you start at a first-round pick and maybe you include two,” La Canfora said on Tiki & Tierney. “I would come out right now and say, ‘They admit culpability, it happened, we have the tape, the Bengals have the tape, so you know what? We’re going to investigate this thoroughly and get to the bottom of it, but as of right now, we can tell you they don’t have a first-round pick this year, and maybe you don’t have a first-round pick in 2021 either.’”

If that punishment seems over-the-top, well, the Patriots aren’t a first-time offender.

“If a one and a four didn’t get through with Deflategate – which, frankly, I think was completely overblown and probably the least offensive infraction that they’ve committed,” La Canfora said. “But if you lose a one for the original Spygate . . . and you lose a one and a four and your quarterback is suspended for a quarter of the season and that doesn’t get your attention, then I don’t know what will. But I’m ratcheting it up. I’m certainly saying we’re going to raise the bar even higher now because if you can’t police yourselves, we’re going to do it for you.”

The Patriots (10-3) play the Bengals (1-12) in Cincinnati this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
