Jim Harbaugh enters his fifth season at Michigan, and he still hasn’t reached the College Football Playoff. Or won the Big Ten. Or won his own division.

Will any of that change in 2019?

“To me, this is the year,” three-time SEC Coach of the Year Houston Nutt said on Reiter Than You. “This has to be the year. Shea Patterson, now after a year under his belt, you’re going to do some more things that fit Shea Patterson. Jim Harbaugh, what does he do? He brings in Josh Gattis. I think offensively that’s going to be a true fit for Shea Patterson. He’ll be able to do some things from RPOs, move in the pocket a little bit more, read-zone probably a little bit more – all those things.”

In other words, Gattis, 35, will try to bring Michigan’s offense into the 21st century. But make no mistake: defense will remain a program hallmark.

“I coached against Jim Harbaugh’s dad, and I know the roots and the DNA of that family,” Nutt said. “It’s hard-nosed. It’s physical. I don’t think you’ll ever get away from that. I think they’ll still have a good power, physical running game. But I just think this is the year. You’ve got a lot of good guys coming back, a lot of experience. This needs to be the year. This also needs to be the year they beat Ohio State.”
