Former Steeler and two-time Super Bowl champion Hines Ward dropped by CBS Sports Radio on Thursday to discuss the drama in Pittsburgh – from Le’Veon Bell to Antonio Brown to everything in between.

We’ll start with Bell. Ward understands why Bell is holding out, but he probably could have handled it better.

“Being a running back, that window of opportunity to maximize your money closes real fast,” Ward said on Tiki and Tierney. “I get it from a business standpoint, but it just caused distractions to the team. I think everybody assumed he was coming back, so when he didn’t, the offensive linemen came out talking about Le’Veon. That’s a major no-no. It was a down-spiral for our team.”

A tie in Cleveland led to a loss to Kansas City. Brown played well in both games, but he was not happy with Steelers offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner. In fact, Brown erupted on the sidelines during the second half of Pittsburgh’s 42-37 loss.

“Of course AB is a passionate player,” Ward said. “He wants the ball at all times because he feels like he can help the team – and for whatever reason, he didn’t get it. I thought this actions on the sideline – that’s not the time and the place to start complaining whether you’re getting the ball or not. Your goal is to encourage other guys. ‘Hey, we’re still in this game. Let’s go out and try to win.’”

The Steelers (0-1-1) must get in the win column Monday against the Buccaneers (2-0).

The question is, will they?

“I just think you really have to lean on the leaders within that locker room to help get things turned around,” Ward said. “And let me tell you: it’s not going to (be good) if they lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night. This is a must-win, I think, for the organization just to get back on the track. Because things are really going to go bad, I think, if they mess around and lose this game. It’s a big game for the Steelers this week.”
