Lloyd Pierce is the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks, but he spent five seasons as an assistant in Philadelphia, where he got to know Joel Embiid quite well. He watched Embiid go from third overall pick in 2014 to All-Star in 2018.

What is Embiid like away from cameras?

“I think people take a lot of note to the personality and his candid side,” Pierce said on Taz & The Moose. “Joel, for me, he’s one of the most loyal guys I've met. I’ve been around him since his first day in the NBA. We played here in Atlanta earlier this year. He came over to the house the night before and spent some time with my little baby girl. He’s a great human being.”

The 76ers don’t have to worry about Embiid off the court, either.

“You’re not going to see a whole lot of Joel off the court,” Pierce said. “He stays in his house and plays video games all the time. That’s kind of one of his issues. You try to get him out to do a little bit more. He’s just a smart guy, though. He’s got a great personality, he’s a competitive human being in everything – and I literally mean everything. Tennis, video games, basketball, whatever it may be.

“But you love his spirit,” Pierce continued. “You love his energy, you love the competitiveness, you love his passion for the game. At the end of the day, that’s what people are really going to see. They’re going to see this guy compete and play with passion all the time.”
