Despite finishing with a losing record for the first time since 2000, USC (5-7) elected to retain head coach Clay Helton.

Former Trojans standout Adoree' Jackson thought it was the right move.

“I was excited,” Jackson said on Reiter Than You. “Everything that Coach Helton did for me – let me go try to pursue my dreams, to go to the Olympic trials and let me go compete and let me just run track and then come back and then focus on football. It was one of those things where he respected me and understood I would do everything right by him and by the school to go to compete. And in return, I was going to do everything I could my junior year to help him and the team succeed as much as possible.”

A consensus All-American in 2016, Jackson helped USC to a 10-3 record and a Rose Bowl win over Penn State. He was a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

“To see him get another year, another shot, I’m excited because he’s a guy that believed in me and understood my dreams,” Jackson said. “I think those are the type of coaches that players need.”

In addition to keeping Helton, USC hired Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator. The Trojans open the 2019 season against Fresno State.
