A lot of NFL quarterbacks are adjusting to new coordinators this offseason, and Matt Ryan is no exception.

Well, sort of. Ryan worked with Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter from 2012-14.

“I think it makes it a lot easier that there’s a level of familiarity between he and myself,” Ryan told Bill Reiter. “I understand what he’s like to work with during the week, how he prepares, how he game-plans. He understands how I am during the week and throughout games, so there’s a comfort level there.”

Koetter became Buccaneers offensive coordinator in 2015 and served as head coach from 2016-18. Ryan, meanwhile, won an MVP in 2016 and helped the Falcons to a Super Bowl appearance.

“I think we both learned a lot in the last four years since we’ve kind of gone our separate ways and competed against each other, and we’re both further along at this point in our careers,” Ryan said. “I’m excited about working with him. He brings a lot to our organization, to our team, a lot of knowledge, and it’s going to be great.”

Koetter went 5-11 in each of the last two seasons in Tampa, but the Bucs ranked ninth and third in the league in total offense in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

“He was productive in Tampa,” Ryan said. “Their offense played at a high level, scored a lot of points and were always difficult for us to go against. I’m excited to have him back.”
