CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora dropped by Ferrall on the Bench to discuss a host of NFL topics, including Ezekiel Elliott, Melvin Gordon, and the Chicago Bears.

La Canfora believes that Elliott and Gordon will both receive new contracts – and sooner rather than later. In fact, he believes Elliott will get a new deal before Week 1.

“How many snaps they give him, how many reps they give him, how Jerry and Stephen Jones handle that, I’m not going to tell you that I know that,” La Canfora said. “But I do believe that deal is signed, sealed, delivered – it’s done, it’s consummated – by Wednesday or Thursday of the week leading into Week 1.”

Gordon, La Canfora says, will likely be signed right after that.

“Maybe he sits out a week or two, but it won’t be much more than that,” La Canfora said. “They’ll be OK without him in the short-term, and if he does sit out a little while, I don’t think it will be much more than a little while. We can obsess about this or that; I really feel like Melvin Gordon is playing for the Chargers at some point in September.”

And, while La Canfora expects big things from Lamar Jackson and the Ravens, he expects regression from Matt Nagy and the Bears.

“He’s got a problem,” La Canfora said of Chicago’s head coach. “The expectations are ratcheted up probably way more than they should be, and they won more games last year than they probably should have, but they did. I think he’s got a quarterback problem, I think he’s got a kicking problem, I think he’s got an expectations problem, and I think he’s got a Vic-Fangio-no-longer-in-the-building problem. I think the Bears are the absolute poster boys for regression in the NFL in 2019.”
