Davis: 49ers Faster Than Ravens, Can Win Super Bowl

The San Francisco 49ers have lost two games this season, both by a field goal. They lost at home to the Seahawks 27-24 in Week 10, and they lost to the Ravens 20-17 in Baltimore on Sunday.

But former 49ers cornerback and Super Bowl champion Eric Davis believes the Niners can still win the NFC – and the Super Bowl.

“This club has a chance because . . . the best team in the NFC today is the Seattle Seahawks, but the 49ers can beat them,” Davis said on Tiki & Tierney. “The best team in the AFC – and I think the best team in the league today – is the Ravens, and we saw that game and the potential that (the Niners) have to play at that level. So this team can peak out as the best team in the league.”

The Niners, for the most part, held the Ravens in check. Baltimore had averaged 40.4 points per game over its previous five games and won its previous three games by a combined 135-26 margin.

Against San Fran? A season-low 20 points.

“I think the 49ers are one of the few teams that are faster than the Baltimore Ravens’ offense,” Davis said. “Defensively, they’re fast. I don’t think you’re going to run away from them. Lamar Jackson is going to be able to get his yardage because of the way they play him. . . . Once you get past the defensive line, I don’t think anyone is walking out there thinking he’s faster; you just know that he’s capable of making plays.”

Jackson rushed 16 times for 101 yards and a touchdown against the 49ers. While no Niner would beat Jackson in a race, there are ways to slow him down.

“It’s about leverage and angles,” Davis said. “We’re not running a 100-yard dash. We’re not running a straight line. It’s about taking the proper angle and the proper leverage, and he’s not fast enough to take away the angle that I can take to tackle him. If we’re lining up running 100 meters, that’s different. But it’s not a question of being as fast as a 4.2, even if you don’t run one. It’s a question of meeting him at the proper intersection. That’s what you understand as a DB.”

The 49ers last won a Super Bowl after the 1994 season. They reached the Super Bowl after the 2012 season, but lost to the Ravens 34-31.

“I still say if Jim Harbaugh hadn’t called a timeout, they would have won the Super Bowl,” Davis said. “But that’s neither here nor there. I have to let that go.”
