With Nick Foles in Jacksonville, the Philadelphia Eagles are being extra cautious with Carson Wentz, which is why he hasn’t played in the preseason.

That may or may not come back to bite the Eagles the first few weeks of the season.

“He’s looked OK in camp,” Sports XChange beat writer Ed Kracz said on Ferrall on the Bench. “He’s been inconsistent – he’s thrown maybe nine or ten interceptions over the last few weeks. It’s kind of interesting that Doug chose not to play him in the preseason. I think his plans kind of changed when Nate Sudfeld went down with that broken wrist in the preseason opener and then Cody Kessler gets the concussion in the second game. I think Carson would have probably played in that third preseason game against the Ravens because just about every other starter did. So there’s some concern about how he’s going to look coming out of the chute.”

Wentz, however, should look noticeably thinner. The 26-year-old completely overhauled his diet in the offseason.

“He’s checked his man card at the door, and he’s gone all vegan,” Kracz said. “He hasn’t had a real pizza in about two months, and he’s lost weight. He’s gotten leaner. He’s hoping that takes some of the pressure off of the knees and the back and the other issues that he has. But he hasn’t been hit since last December 9 against the Cowboys. He’s going to get hit in that season-opener against the Redskins. They have a very good defensive line, very good pass rush.

“But it could be a slow start for Wentz,” Kracz continued. “He hasn’t really had any time to work out the rust in the preseason. I think it could be a slow start for him, but if he can stay healthy, he’ll get better and better as the season goes along.”
