The Cleveland Browns have missed the playoffs in 19 of the last 20 seasons, including 16 straight. They have finished 5-11 or worse in 12 of those 16 seasons.

Nevertheless, expectations remain sky-high for 2019.

“The energy is just insane,” Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan host Dustin Fox said on Taz & The Moose. “It’s really, really insane. I don’t think we’ve seen anything like this in quite some time with any team. Maybe the Cavaliers come close when LeBron came back (in terms of) the excitement of the city. But the energy level on social media, with our callers for the Browns – they can’t wait for today.”

Today – as in Thursday, July 25.

“Today is training camp,” Fox said. “They’ll be packed out there in Berea. Every practice is going to be packed. Every preseason game is going to be packed. Obviously the expectations are probably a little bit too high in terms of what they’re going to do because they haven’t proven anything, but fans are expecting playoffs.”

Some, in fact, are expecting a Super Bowl.

“I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves,” Fox said, “but that’s sort of the expectation already.”

How does this excitement compare to LeBron James returning to Cleveland? Is it about the same?

“I think it’s more,” Fox said. “It’s a Browns town. Even though LeBron was so great and the Cavs were an awesome team, nothing tops the Browns.”

In 2014, the Browns started 7-4 with Brian Hoyer at quarterback. They lost their final five games and missed the playoffs, but at 7-4, Browns fans were delirious.

“This city was electric,” Fox said. “That’s the closest I can remember to this feeling with the Browns. It’s insane how much this town rallies around this football team.”
