On Tuesday, Chad Kelly was arrested for trespassing. On Wednesday, the Denver Broncos released him.

Kelly, the final pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, has a checkered past. He was dismissed from Clemson’s program in 2014, spent a year at East Mississippi Community College, and ultimately transferred to Ole Miss.

“I think it was a red flag for sure,” CBS Sports college football writer Barrett Sallee said on The DA Show, referring to Kelly’s dismissal from Clemson. “It’s crazy to think he’s been kicked off a high school team, a college team and now a pro team – that’s quite the trifecta. When Chad got to Ole Miss, by and large, he cleaned up his act. I think Hugh Freeze – for all the negative that Hugh Freeze draws to his name, I think he did a pretty good job of personally helping out people on this roster that needed help. I think Chad is probably the one that’s most notable.”

In 2015, Kelly had a great season, leading Ole Miss to wins over Alabama, Auburn and LSU, as the Rebels finished 10-3.

“So if you’re the Broncos or if you’re an NFL team, I think you had to look at Chad and say, ‘All right, great talent, has a bunch of red flags, but what is he right in the here and now?’” Sallee said. “Coming out of college, I thought – and I think a lot of other people thought – that he was in a pretty good place personally. So when it comes to this, he doesn’t get a lot of strikes – and obviously one strike and you’re out with the Broncos.”

It remains to be seen if another team will take a chance on Kelly, who has never attempted an NFL pass.

“It’s hard for me to say if this is a trend or is this a first one-off thing – because he really had cleaned up his act off the field when he left Ole Miss,” Sallee said. “Beyond that, I don’t even know.”
