The PGA Championship will unfold at Bethpage Black this week, and many in the golf world couldn’t be happier. It’s another major, sure, but it’s another major now – as opposed to mid-August.

“I think (the new schedule is) fantastic,” Golfweek senior writer David Dusek said on Taz & The Moose. “We get a really nice rhythm to the season with the Players Championship moving from May back to its old traditional time, which was March. There’s a big lead-up to the Masters, obviously we’re down in Augusta in April, and once every four or five weeks, there’s a major championship run, which is great.”

Thus, we have the Masters in April, the PGA Championship in May, the U.S. Open in June, and the British Open in July.

“It’s a more complete, easy-to-follow storyline until we finish up at the British Open in July and then the FedEx Playoffs come,” Dusek said. “Then we’re going to finish up with the Tour Championship before the monster that is the NFL and college football really kicks in big time. The players love it because it’s much easier fo them to schedule and it gives them an opportunity to have a genuine offseason through the fall and early winter.”

As for this weekend, the golf world will watch with bated breath as Tiger Woods goes for his second straight major championship.

“It’s almost too much to hope for,” Dusek said. “We got such an enormous lift for the sport (when he won the Masters). Whoever wins the Masters, it’s going to be on the front page of the morning papers on the Monday after the tournament. When Tiger wins, it’s literally the biggest headline for two or three days around the world.”
