As great as the Vegas Golden Knights have been this year, many hockey fans don’t want them to win the Stanley Cup. The same can be said for many in and around the league.

Why, you ask? Because apparently it looks bad if an expansion team with a bunch of castoffs wins a Stanley Cup in its first year.

Three-time Stanley Cup champion and current New Jersey Devils color analyst Ken Daneyko, however, doesn’t quite see it that way.

“It’s not about the look or the league; it’s just one of those remarkable sports stories,” Daneyko said on Taz & The Moose. “It is what it is. The Vegas Golden Knights have earned everything they’ve gotten. Their owner said in September we’re going to be competitive this year, we’re going to make the playoffs in three years, and we’re going to compete for the Stanley Cup in six. So they had no clue this could happen, either.”

Either way, Vegas won its division, won its conference, and leads Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals 1-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals.

“This is what movies are made about,” Daneyko said. “It opens eyes as a casual hockey fan. So regardless of maybe how it looks for the National Hockey League, I think it’s one of those greatest sports stories ever. Myself, I like to see star players – guys as good as Ovechkin, guys that work as hard as they do – yeah, I’d love to see him win a Stanley Cup. But there’s no denying what the Vegas Golden Knights have been able to do here and they deserve everything they’ve gotten because of the style they play and the focus they’ve had from day one. They call themselves the Golden Misfits. They came out with a chip on their shoulder because they felt their (former teams) didn’t want them. That’s the bottom line.”

Vegas hosts Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.
