Chiefs Will Be Tough Out, But Ravens The Team To Beat

The Chiefs beat the Chargers, 24-17, in Mexico City on Monday. It was a solid win, but not a great one. In fact, the Chiefs (7-4) are 3-4 over their last seven games.

Are they still a legitimate Super Bowl contender?

“They’re going to be a tough out,” NFL analyst Steve Beuerlein said on Reiter Than You. “Generally speaking, you’re going to have to score 30 points to beat them. Even if they get into a shootout, Mahomes and that offense don’t mind that. Of course they’d like to not have to do that every week, but they are built to do that every week. As long as (Patrick Mahomes) doesn’t have any setbacks injury-wise, as long as they have all their guns and all their weapons ready to roll come stretch time, they’re going to be able to play with anybody.”

Patrick Mahomes had a quiet night against the Chargers. He went 19-of-32 for 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

In fact, Mahomes has one touchdown or fewer in four of his last six games.

“He’s shown he’s human,” Beuerlein said. “With more film and more tape out there, teams can start identifying things that you do really well and things that you struggle with a little bit more. You kind of get a beat on what they like to do, so it becomes more difficult. It puts more pressure not only on Mahomes, but on Andy Reid designing the game-plans, and how do you change things up a little bit to keep defenses from really being in the right look all the time? It is a chess game. If you don’t have the right play called at the right time, even (with a) quarterback (as) great as Mahomes is, he’s not going to have a chance to make those plays.

“The bottom line is he is one of, if not the, best quarterback in the NFL right now,” Beuerlein continued. “I’m not worried about him whatsoever. But he is starting to learn how to play with injuries now as well. He’ll be there when push comes to shove. The big question about the Chiefs is whether that defense can hold up.”

The Chiefs have allowed at least 31 points in each of their last three losses. They would likely have a tough time matching up with, say, the Ravens (8-2), who lead the NFL with 34.1 points per game.

“They’re the team to beat right now in the AFC,” Beuerlein said of Baltimore. “What they did to New England a couple of weeks ago put an exclamation point on that. I think Bill Belichick and he Patriots know that, and they’ve got to be very, very concerned about that.”
