The Chargers have missed the playoffs in seven of the last eight seasons. The worst part? They came oh-so-close to making it more often than not. They’ve finished 9-7 four times and 8-8 once.

This year, however, the Chargers (7-2) are on pace for their best finish since 2009, when they went 13-3.

Philip Rivers is a big reason why. He’s completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 2,459 yards, 21 touchdowns and four interceptions. He’s been, in a word, great.

“I think he does that every year,” Chargers safety Jahleel Addae said on Reiter Than You. “That’s the crazy thing about it. I’ve been here six years and I’ve seen his work ethic, how he goes about his business, the kind of professional that he is. I just think the reason we’re winning now (is because of him).”

The Chargers have won six straight games, winning some close games that they’ve often lost in the past.

“When you win, sometimes quarterbacks get too much praise,” Addae said. “Sometimes quarterbacks get too much bashing. But he’s Hall of Famer, no doubt about it, and he’s just playing the type of football that we all know that he can do. When you have someone like him at the quarterback position, you have a shot.”

The Chargers play each of their next two games at home, beginning with Denver (3-6) this Sunday. Kickoff is at 4:05 p.m. ET.
