A two-time Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion, Lloyd has aspirations beyond the pitch

You probably know Carli Lloyd first and foremost for her accomplishments on the soccer pitch – and for good reason. Lloyd, 37, is a two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion and a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

As it turns out, though, she’s also a pretty darn good kicker. Lloyd drilled a 55-yard field goal, with ease, during a practice session in August 2019.

Could Lloyd actually play in the NFL?

“I definitely think anything is possible,” Lloyd said on Tiki & Tierney. “I wouldn’t do something that I didn’t think that I could do. But there’s one thing with thinking you can do something and then not preparing, and there’s one thing thinking you can do something and you prepare. You get the technique down, and you work on it. It’s all about repetition. I’ve spent the last 17 years of my career breaking down every technique in the game of soccer – everything. My right foot, my left foot, juggling, shooting, passing – just doing everything efficient, and it’s all about that repetition.”

While Lloyd hopes to one day play in the NFL, don’t worry, soccer fans. She isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

“First and foremost, I’m a soccer player right now,” she said. “I’m giving it everything I have in the NWSL these next couple seasons and then hopefully I’ll be a part of the Olympics. And then we’ll see what happens. Anything is possible. I’ve always been somebody from a little girl on up to be able to pick up anything, not be afraid of it and embrace the challenge of being able to maybe not do something the first couple of times but staying with it and then eventually being able to do it. So we’ll see.”

Even if Lloyd does not play in the NFL, she could create an avenue for other women to do so.

“There is [an avenue for girls to play], especially talking with Katie Sowers and her sister, Liz, who have played football,” Lloyd said. “There is a women’s league. Hopefully it will give other women and girls around the country more confidence to be able to grow up and maybe want to be a football player.”
