With Tom Brady in Tampa Bay, the New England Patriots, as of now, will start Jarrett Stidham or Brian Hoyer at quarterback. Key words being as of now.

At least we think.

“If Bill Belichick is going to ride a series of backups right now, it’s the ultimate troll job,” Damon Amendolara said on The DA Show. “It is, ‘I can win with Brian Hoyer, Jarrett Stidham and a stick of gum.’ I’m here for it. I want to see it. Because if Belichick can win with those guys, those quarterbacks in this quarterback-dominant league, he has shown us all up. [He] would have really proven he can do it with anybody.”

Belichick went 11-5 with Matt Cassel. He also won games with a young Jimmy Garoppolo and a young Jacoby Brissett.

“But it can’t be Hoyer versus Stidham, can it?” Amendolara asked. “That can’t honestly be the preseason quarterback battle. If it is, Belichick is going for the jugular. He wants a high degree of difficulty – because there’s got to be a better option out there. I can’t imagine this is where the quarterback depth chart ends for the Pats. I cannot imagine a day where the Patriots roll into training camp and it’s Hoyer versus Stidham to be the successor to Tom Brady.”

Is it possible that Belichick would tank for Trevor Lawrence? Amendolara says no.

“No, with Bill Belichick, they’re not ever going to be bad enough to be that high in the draft,” he said. “They’re never going to be 2-14, 3-13. They already just re-signed Devin McCourty, Jason McCourty. They franchised Joe Thuney.  They’re spending money to not be terrible. They’re not prepared for 2-14. They won’t be 2-14.”
